One of the leading composers in Indian cinema, A.R. Rahman. He is the only Indian composer who won an Oscar Award. It is alleged that Rahman paid Rs 3 crore 47 lakh directly to the ARR Foundation for composing the ringtone for the UK-based Libra Mobiles.
The Income Tax Department is currently pursuing a case against this in the Chennai High Court. Judges have ordered AR Rahman to send a reply notice in this regard when the case comes up for hearing today. The trial has since been adjourned to another date.
T.R Senthilkumar, appearance for the Income Tax Department said, “This amount has been received by AR Rahman. Rahman can send the remaining amount to his trust to go to the income tax withholding but it should not be received directly through the trust. Money coming to trust is tax-deductible.”
The judges who accepted the case have issued an order to send a notice to AR Rahman to explain about this. AR Rahman currently has several films in his possession. He has worked in films like Vikram’s Cobra, Sivakarthikeyan’s Ayalaan, Mani Ratnam directed epic historical film Ponniyin Selvan.
