The central government is taking steps to reduce imports of non-essential commodities and promote domestic production.

Last June, the government banned the import of some new pneumatic tires used in cars, buses, lorries, and motorcycles. Imports of various items ranging from TVs to security equipment were banned in India.
The next step was to bring in restrictions on the import of the air conditioner and its components. It was also planned to regulate imports in a number of ways, including raising customs duties and increasing technical quality controls.

In this case, the government has banned the import of air conditioners with air conditioners. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a statement issued yesterday that there was a change in its import policy.
About 90 percent of the air conditioners and compressors used in assembled air conditioners are imported from China and Thailand. Manufacturing companies in both countries will face a loss of imports which are banned in India.
