Lalitha Jewelery is located near the Chattram bus stand in Trichy. Two robbers broke into the shop in the early hours of last year and looted jewelery worth Rs 12 crore and 41 lakh. The robbery was carried out by a gang led by the notorious robber Thiruvarur Murugan, police said.
Murugan (age 44) is from Thiruvarur. He has performed not only in Tamil Nadu but also in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana. There are numerous robbery cases against Murugan. In 2008, Murugan formed his own gang of robbers and first started performing in Bangalore. Then in 2011, the Bangalore police arrested Murugan in a robbery case.
Murugan, who loves movies, had his ambition of becoming a filmmaker. At the same time, Murugan has a penchant for robbing banks and jewelery shops. The gang led by Murugan was arrested in December 2015.
They confiscated gold jewelery and cash worth Rs 1 crore 72 lakh from the gang. Murugan, who was also released on bail in this case, was again involved in a series of robberies at 17 houses in the Anna Nagar Thirumangalam area of Chennai after 2 years.

Thiruvarur Murugan has been lodged in the Bangalore jail in connection with the Trichy jewelery robbery case. He was admitted to a private hospital in Bangalore a few months ago due to ill health. The robber Murugan died after being treated at the hospital for 6 months.
